Xhabir Memedi Deralla
Xhabir Memedi Deralla was born in 1967 in Tetovo. He studied History of Philosophy at Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and became a journalist in 1988.
Deralla worked in London as a journalist in The War Report, and contributed to several London based newspaper and magazines in 1994 (including The Guardian). Later, he became the Program Director of the Student Radio, and started his activities in the civil society sector (Multi-Culture Festival ’96). He took part in a US State Department-funded study tour on civil society management in 1994.
He has worked as a host and editor of various radio programs in Macedonia and on the first independent TV station A1 as the author of Guerilla a TV program on art avant-garde. Deralla is publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Zrak (Ray, Macedonian language), an alternative periodical publication, and is the co-publisher of Jeta (Albanian language), a political magazine. He also worked as a journalist in Forum, a political magazine, from its establishment in 1997 until 2000. In the meantime, he also worked for numerous media in Macedonia and abroad, mainly with Dutch media companies.
He has been written about internationally and his words or articles about him have been published in newspapers, magazines and books on Macedonia and the Balkans in the USA, UK, Holland, Sweden, New Zealand and many other countries.
Deralla publishes a small amount of poetry and prose in the English language and his poetry collection The Man With a Hair of a Child was published in 1999. In 2011, he published Apocalypse, a book of poetry and photographs. He is author of several unpublished books of poetry, novels, and screenplays. Xhabir Memedi Deralla is known more as an author and a producer of numerous multimedia projects, short films, documentaries, festivals, art-happenings, etc.
He is the leader and one of the founders of CIVIL – Center for Freedom in 1999 and also runs many projects of societal importance (peace and reconciliation, arms control, and human rights).
